Byekwaso Slams SCVU’s Defending

SC Victoria University head coach Morley Byekwao slammed his side’s defending after watching defending champions KCCA tear them apart in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) at Lugogo on Tuesday.

The university side has had a torrid start to the season with third defeats in eight games and a 3-0 thrashing on Tuesday had them slide down to 12 with just nine points.

Playing well upfront with good possession, Byekwaso’s side capitulated in worrying fashion, allowing Derrick Nsibambi, starting in place of absent Brian Umony to grab a brace after Tom Masiko had given coach George Nsimbe’s side the lead from the spot-kick all in the first half left the crowd stunned.

“Annoyed? Yes. But you have to give them credit. They were such a better side converting their chances and we gave a poor defensive performance from the first to the last yesterday. We never felt comfortable on the ball,” a rather nonplussed Byekwaso tells Red Pepper Online edition.

“We got punished. A bit of bad luck because the pitch was so bad but our defensive performance was not good enough.” “We created the most chances even in the first half but we couldn’t convert and our transitions were a bit slow,” Byekwaso added.

“We are keen on correcting things but we have many injuries,” he added, denying claims that some players had been suspended from the club for missing training last Monday

Starting his first game of the season after being sidelined with injury, Masiko put the hosts’ ahead on 12 minutes, converting a penalty after Derrick Nsibambi was fouled in the area.

It was Nsibambi’s turn with a minute to half time as the striker headed home Brian Majwega’s cross.

Seconds within which SCVU restarted the game, Nsibambi was on the scoresheet again, making it 3-0.

SCVU did dominate possession after recess but could not find a breakthrough as KCC customarily picked their maximum points. The victory sees KCC go third in the standings with 14 points, five behind leaders Vipers and just two adrift of SC Villa and Express.
