Cecafa’s Ethiopia Battle Nigeria For World Cup Spot

Afcon holders Nigeria will battle Confederation of East and Central Football Association’s only representative Ethiopia for a spot at the 2014 World Cup, as was decided by the Africa zone play-off draw in Cairo on Monday.
Côte d’Ivoire, the continent’s top-ranked side, will take on fellow west Africans Senegal who ended Uganda’s dream with a 1-0 victory in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on September 7.
Ghana, quarter-finalists at South Africa 2010, will scrap it out with seven-time African champions Egypt.
Cameroon, the first African country to reach the last-eight of the World Cup in 1990, will face Tunisia.
Burkina Faso, Afcon finalists this year, will clash with Algeria.
The countries will play each other over two legs (home and away), with the five victors qualifying for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
The first leg is scheduled for 11-15 October, with the return duel slated for 15-19 November.
Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia were seeded – according to Fifa’s latest rankings – before today’s draw, meaning they were not at risk of meeting at the final qualifying hurdle.
