CHINA-UGANDA FRIENDSHIP! Oboth Salutes Beijing for Transforming Uganda with Dams, Roads, Health
KAMPALA — Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth has praised China for its decades-long contribution to Uganda’s infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and industrial development, describing the two countries as close partners.
Oboth made the remarks at a reception at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Wednesday, September 23, to mark China’s 77th National Day and welcome China’s newly appointed Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Wu Guangrong.
The Speaker said Uganda-China relations, which date back to 1962, have grown into a comprehensive strategic partnership whose benefits are being felt by ordinary Ugandans.
“The gathering here itself is a reflection of the true kinship and shared bonds between our two nations,” Oboth said.
CHINA’S BIG PROJECTS
Oboth pointed to several major infrastructure projects as evidence of China’s contribution to Uganda’s development.
Among them are the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, Karuma and Isimba hydropower dams, upgrades to Entebbe International Airport and the National Stadium.
He also highlighted China’s contribution to agriculture through the Kibimba and Doho farms, as well as the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital.
The Speaker said the projects have contributed to Uganda’s infrastructure, energy, agricultural and healthcare sectors.
Oboth also paid tribute to Chinese medical teams that have served in Uganda continuously since 1983.
The reception doubled as a farewell to the outgoing 25th Chinese Medical Team and a welcome for the incoming 26th team, with Oboth commending the doctors and other health workers for their contribution to saving lives in Ugandan hospitals.
He said Uganda-China cooperation has now expanded beyond infrastructure and healthcare to include education, technology, culture, trade, agriculture, security and parliamentary cooperation.
Oboth welcomed Ambassador Wu and pledged Parliament’s support towards strengthening relations between Uganda and China.
AMBASSADOR WU PUSHES TRADE, OIL
Ambassador Wu described Uganda-China relations as a rapidly expanding comprehensive strategic partnership, pointing to hydropower, oil, agriculture and trade as key areas of cooperation.
He said Chinese-built hydropower projects are helping provide electricity to homes and industrial parks as Uganda pursues industrialisation.
Wu also highlighted Uganda’s emerging oil industry, particularly the Kingfisher oil field in western Uganda.
He noted that on September 2, President Yoweri Museveni officially named Uganda’s crude oil “Pearl Sweet”, describing the oil project as a source of national pride and an industry expected to contribute to economic development.
RICE, COFFEE TARGET CHINA
On agriculture, Ambassador Wu said Chinese hybrid rice technology is helping Ugandan farmers increase production and strengthen food security.
He further said Uganda is benefiting from improved access to the Chinese market following the introduction of zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries on May 1, 2026.
Wu said high-quality African products, including Ugandan coffee, are entering the Chinese market at an unprecedented pace.
The event ended with Speaker Oboth proposing a toast to the continued friendship and development cooperation between Uganda and China.
Among the dignitaries who attended were State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Haruna Kasolo, State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Hon. Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, State Minister for Finance and Economic Development (Investments), and Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson Ms. Mariam Fauzat Wangadya.
