Civil Society Launches Campaign Against Corruption

Ugandan Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) have today launched the anti-corruption week at Hotel Africana to address the rampant corruption in the country which has forced a number of foreign donors to cut aid to Uganda.
From Dec 3 to Dec 7, different CSO’s will hold media campaigns against corruption, hold youth debates, dialogue meetings and sports events pressuring government to expose and punish all corrupt officials.
This was after the successful launch of the first Black Monday in Kampala last month where societal stakeholders held a mock burial of corruption in Uganda that was characterized with all members wearing black clothes.
Last week the CSO’s had threatened to strip naked in public if the government does not take serious action against those indicted in corruption scams in the country.
The CSO’s also intend to publish a list of properties and businesses owned by corrupt officials so that the public can boycott their services and stop filling their pockets with more money.
Anti-Corruption Coalition of Uganda (ACCU) is leading the campaign, in collaboration with Action Aid, Uganda Debt Network (UDN), Transparency International, and Uganda National NGO Forum.
CSO’s are citing scandals like the misuse of pension funds in the public service commission, diversion of funds in the Office of the Prime Minister, and ministry of Local Government (LC bicycles), Global Funds theft, Pension scam, Temangalo scam and CHOGM fund scam among other scandals.
Different MPs, religious leaders have joined the campaign. Events in the Anti corruption week will be sustained in the “Black Monday Movement” where all Ugandan anti corruption activists will be wearing black clothes every Monday and different anti corruption activities conducted.
