CMI Operative Netted For Extorting Money From UPDF Applicants


Private Ibrahim Musana, a UPDF soldier attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Rehabilitation Centre in Mubende is trouble for alleged extortion.
Musana was picked up by police detectives on Thursday afternoon at Soroti Sports grounds over allegations of extorting money applicants seeking to join the army.
It came after some of the applicants accused the soldiers of abandoning them after collecting money from them with promises of helping to join the force in vain.
At least 700 of the 900 applicants who showed up at Soroti sports grounds for recruitment were rejected on grounds of poor health and lack of the requisite academic qualifications.
Capt. Telesphor Turyamumanya, the 5th division army spokesperson confirmed the arrest. Turyamumanya said that the suspect is wanted for extorting money from some applicants with promises of helping them to join the force.
Ayub Waiswa , the Soroti district Investigation Officer said the suspect is in police custody. He said they were yet to prefer charges against the suspect as they were still recording statements from other officers and later the accused.
It is alleged that, the suspect collected between 50,000 to 200,000 shillings from each applicant. Justine Ooja, one of those helping in the recruitment exercise says that they saw the suspect collecting money from applicants since Wednesday until he was picked up. Ooja says Musana followed the recruitment team to Lira, Kaberamaido and Soroti until he was trapped on Thursday.
According to the suspects pass slip he is on leave for one month and is supposed to be in Namayingo in Bugiri district.
