Court Summons Nabukenya Over By Election Violence
Nabukenya is accused of inciting her supporters and they beaten NRM Mobilisers
Court has issued fresh summons for Brenda Nabukenya, the Luweero District Woman MP for allegedly inciting voters during the recently concluded by elections.
Sylvia Nabaggala, the Luweero Chief magistrate has ordered the MP to appear in court on 4th July 2014 to answer charges of interfering with electioneering activities contrary to Section 24 (b) of parliamentary Election act 2011.
She is jointly accused with Julius Mayiga and Richard Katabira, residents of Kiwanula and Mabuye villages respectively.
According to the charge sheet, Nabukenya allegedly incited the duo to attack Steven Ssentumbwe, Patrick Mwesigye and Robert Ssempungu at Lwapongo swamp while returning from a campaign rally in Kamira County.
They are also accused of abducting and robbing Ssentumbwe, the NRM mobiliser for Kamira Sub County for allegedly bribing voters and defacing the Nabukenya’s campaign posters.
Richard Birivumbuka, the Luweero State Attorney says that Nabukenya was supposed to appear in court on 16th June 2014 but didn’t show up on grounds that she was sick.
He says that as a result, the chief magistrate has issued fresh summons adding that, should she fail to show up she will be arrested and arraigned in court.
Birivumbuka says that Katabira and Mayiga appeared in court and were released on bail pending investigations. Nabukenya has confirmed receiving the summons and described the charge sheet as defective and vowed to challenge it in court.
According to Nabukenya, the charges are aimed at intimidating her.
She accused police dragging her to court to appease President Yoweri Museveni who openly expressed his dissatisfaction with force and Electoral commission for not disqualifying her from the polls.
Nabukenya said it is such tramped up charges, which have created a case backlog in court denying hundreds of people justice.
Charles Ssebyala, the Luweero Town council LC 3 chairperson also describes the charges as witch hunt by NRM agents and asks them to admit defeat.
He says president Museveni recently published a missive rejecting Nabukenya’s victory, which he suspects could have compelled state operatives to come with flimsy charges to have the elections nullified.
Nabukenya emerged winner after polling 38586 votes beating NRM’s Balwana Rebecca Nalwanga who managed 22236 votes. Ramulah Kadaala and Faridah Namubiru, both independents shared amongst them themselves slightly over 1500 votes.
