CROSS-BORDER MURDER! Two Kenyans Who Killed Dr. Mutiso & Fled To Uganda Nabbed Hiding In Kyanja Heights Flats
NAIROBI/KAMPALA — Detectives investigating the assassination of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso have arrested three more suspects in a major cross-border operation spanning Nairobi and Kampala.
The latest breakthrough was achieved by a specialised team drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters’ Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), Operations Directorate and Homicide Bureau, working with the Uganda Police Force.
Acting on forensic leads, detectives traced the suspects to Kyanja Heights flats in the Nakawa suburb of Kampala, where two men who had allegedly sneaked into Uganda following the murder were arrested.
The two are Police Constable Bett Kiplangat Collins, No. 118491, attached to Thogoto Police Station, and civilian Pius Muiru Mbugua.
The National Police Service (NPS) commended the Uganda Police Force for its professional cooperation, which enabled the raid, arrests and secure detention of the suspects.
The two suspects are currently being held at Jinja Road Police Station and are expected to be escorted back to Nairobi for processing and arraignment.
Earlier, detectives had intercepted a third suspect, Samuel Karanja Gathoni, alias “Lawyer”, within the Langata Multi-Media area as he headed towards Ongata Rongai.
Investigators have linked PC Bett to the surveillance operation preceding the killing, establishing that he served as co-driver to Daniel Mwangi Njoroge, described as a central organiser of the operation and driver of the Land Cruiser Prado registration KDH 600A.
The Prado allegedly played a key role in the deadly ambush on July 29, 2026, when it was used to box in the Uber vehicle carrying Dr. Mutiso in Upper Hill, Nairobi, moments before she was fatally shot.
Detectives have also established that Mbugua allegedly served as a crucial link between the execution team and the person who contracted them.
According to the investigators, Mbugua acted as the paymaster, moving money used for logistics and facilitating the movement of the alleged hit team.
The three suspects will be taken through the Kenyan criminal justice process after the two arrested in Uganda are escorted back to Kenya.
The DCI said the cross-border arrests demonstrate that the investigation remained active despite the suspects’ movement out of Kenya.
“Flight delayed the file. It did not close it,” the DCI said.
The latest arrests also come amid intense public interest and controversy surrounding the investigation, with the DCI accusing some political actors of attempting to exploit the murder for political mileage.
The agency said claims that suspects had previously been arrested and secretly released, or that security officials had helped them escape, were false and amounted to propaganda intended to undermine the investigation.
The DCI said the arrests in Kampala provided a factual response to those claims while thanking Dr. Mutiso’s family, friends, relatives and members of the public for their patience and support during the investigation.
The agency said it would continue updating the public on significant developments whenever it is operationally appropriate to do so.
