Defender Malinga Dropped As Cranes Leave For Tanzania

Uganda Cranes Head Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has dropped experienced defender Richard Malinga from they head to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Cranes play Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars in the first leg of the 2014 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier on Saturday.

After a 3-1 victory against the U-23 side in a friendly game played at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on Wednesday, Micho and his technical team dropped seven players including Malinga.

The Serbian national says that the technical team looked at a number of things and picked players who will fight till the last whistle to get a good away result. He said the dropped players will however join the team on return to prepare for the second leg.

Besides Malinga who skippered KCCA FC to league victory last season, the other players dropped include; Ismail Watenga, Hakim Magombe, Owen Kasule, Feni Ali, Micheal Birungi and last season’s league top scorer Herman Wasswa.

SC Victoria striker Patrick Edema, who netted a brace in the build-up against the U-23s, will lead the team’s attack together with Tony Odur, while skipper Hassan Mawanda Wasswa and Joseph Mpande are expected to hold the midfield together.

Skipper Wasswa said at Entebbe International Airport that they are going to face a big team that they will not underrate.

Out-going Fufa President Lawrence Mulindwa and the in-coming President Moses Magogo are also expected to be in Tanzania to support the team.
