Doctors in Trouble Over Neglect of Duty

Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda

r. Steven Mirembe, the in -Charge of Kyazanga Health Centre IV is in trouble for alleged neglect of duty. Grace Kabayo, the Lwengo RDC has ordered the district health department to take disciplinary action against Mirembe after she toured the health center and found it infested with bed bugs and fleas as a result of poor sanitation. The blood sucking bed bugs and fleas have invaded general ward, male and children’s wards. Kyazanga Health Centre IV was built in 1993.

Shakira Birungi, a patient in the female ward says the mattresses there are infested with bed bugs. She says the filthy state of the wards is a good breeding ground for bed bugs. Birungi, who was admitted with malaria, showed URN three mattresses infested with the blood sucking insects.  The patient says she decided to sleep on the floor because she could not put up with the blood sucking parasites.

Baker Mujjuzi, who is attending to his sick wife, says when they raised the issue of the bed bugs with Dr Mirembe he just walked away without saying a word. He claims that because of the bed bug infestation in the wards some health workers have stopped attending to them in their wards leaving them stranded. Rashid Kawawa, the Kyazanga Town Council LC3 Chairperson claims that some residents have shied away the health centre due to bedbugs and fleas, which are a result of poor hygiene. He claims that members of the Town Council Health Service Committee team, who toured the health center recently found the wards very dirty.

George Mutabaazi, the Lwengo LC5 Chairman says there is no value for the 4 million shillings the district allocates to the health center every quarter under PHC for cleaning.

Dr. Ronald Kaye, the Lwengo district Medical officer says he plans to summon Dr. Steven Mirembe to explain the state of affairs at the health centre before taking any action.
Dr. Steven Mirembe, the In Charge of the Health Centre refused to speak about the poor sanitation in the health centre. But Tom Kakaire, the deputy In Charge of Kyazanga Health Center IV told our reporter that he was not aware of the bed bugs and fleas in the wards. Kakaire however admits poor sanitation saying they have only one cleaner.
