Dr Okello Okello on Kadaga’s alleged tribal remarks

Rt. Hon. Kadaga’s obsession with tribal identity and religious sectarianism in today’s Uganda is dangerous, backward, and unbefitting of a national leader. At a time when the country demands unity, inclusion, and progressive leadership, Kadaga’s repeated recourse to tribal and Protestant-centric rhetoric is not only archaic but deeply divisive.Uganda is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious nation. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has built its strength on a clear, non-sectarian foundation—bringing together all Ugandans, regardless of tribe, region, or creed. Our political philosophy is rooted in pan-Africanism and national unity, not tribal chauvinism.Kadaga’s actions undermine the very fabric of cohesion that this country has labored to build. By stoking ethnic resentment and suggesting religious exclusion, she plays directly into the hands of extremists and secessionists. This is reckless politics and disqualifies her from being a unifying figure. As the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Kadaga should champion integration—not propagate toxic parochialism. East African unity demands a spirit of nationalism, not sectarian favoritism. We remind her that public office is a national duty, not a tribal crown. Her rhetoric must change—or she risks being remembered as a leader who tore down what others built with blood, sweat, and sacrifice.Uganda is bigger than Busoga, Protestantism, or any single group. Let us build, not break.
