Education Ministry Evasive Over Fagil’s Fate
Uganda’s education and sport ministry is yet to pronounce itself on the fate of Fagil Mandy, the embattled Uganda National Examinations Board chairperson.
On March 17th, 2014, Irene Mulyagonja, the Inspector General of Government issued a report recommending the removal of Fagil Mandy.
In her report, the IGG said she found Fagil’s temperament not suitable for a person who can manage the office of the UNEB Chairperson. The report also implicated Mandy for influence peddling during the recruitment of the UNEB Executive Secretary. However, since the report was issued the Education Ministry has remained none committal on the recommendations.
When asked whether the ministry would implement the recommendation of the IGG, Jessica Alupo, the Minister of Education and Sports feigned ignorance of the report. Alupo says she will act once she receives the report.
Though she denied receiving the letter, a source within the ministry who preferred not to be named said the letter was duly delivered to her and she read every bit of it. Fagil Mandy, the person at the centre of the controversy has acknowledged receipt of the letter.
Mandy says he has read the letter but says he will not discuss the content of the letter in media. Mandy says he will also respect the decision taken by the appointing authority;
Mandy’s decision to accept the outcome of the report is a complete turnaround. Earlier on, Mandy said the country would suffer if he got sacked.
However he still maintained this time that he is an important person in the education sector that the country cannot afford to lose.
