Germany recalls Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Country Rep after illegal migrants saga
Top officials at Kololo based Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-KAS are panicking over a looming job loss following the recent illegal migrants’ saga.
Those on the chopping line, according to sources are Anna Reismann, Country Representative (Uganda & South Sudan) and programme manager Bernard Mukhone.
Sources say partners and the bosses in German are not happy with the incident and fingers have reportedly been pointed at Reismann.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that she has already been recalled.
The KAS is a political foundation with close ties to the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).
The NGO supports political dialogue, civic education, democratic governance and participation, professional and free media, and sustainable economic policies..
The illegal migrants’ incident involved three German nationals who were picked up last month by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration for working in Uganda illegally. The trio, whose identities have been withheld, were working for Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-KAS at their Uganda -South Sudan offices in Kampala.
Two of the Germans reportedly entered Uganda on a tourist visa while the other had a student visa. The one on the student visa claimed that he was studying at Makerere University.
Instead, they had been working with KAS without the mandatory work permits for foreigners working in the country.
“The three alleged that they were on an unpaid internship but they were drawing salaries off the record yet they were not paying pay as you earn,” the source said.
They were later charged, fined US$650, and then ordered to leave the country.
Investigations also unearthed that KAS officials have been bringing in their relatives, friends, girlfriends and boyfriends from Germany, enroll them in Ugandan institutions for short courses and later illegally employ them at KAS.
There are also allegations that Ugandans working there are silently murmuring over low pay and other not so good working conditions as we shall reveal in our subsequent publication.
On the contrary those from Germany and other European nations reportedly swim in huge salaries, allowances and other perks.
According to Simon Peter Mundeyi, the spokesperson of the Directorate of Immigration they carried out raids at KAS although he was quick to add that there is nothing extraordinary about this operation.
“On that day when we were at Konrad Adenauer, we also carried out similar visits to other offices and factories to see whether the people they were employing didn’t violate immigration laws. We do that work every day because it’s part of our core mandate,” Mundeyi said.
