President Yoweri Museveni has lashed out at those who claim that there is no political will to fight corruption, saying the problem is accounting officers who fail to detect crime, poor investigations and lack of effective prosecution of culprits.

The President urged all those concerned in the fight against corruption to be more hard working and honest saying the battle against corruption is going to be overcome.

He was on Monday presiding over the swearing in ceremony of the new deputy IGG George Nathan Bamugemereire at State House in Entebbe. Mr. Bamugemereire was recently appointed by the H.E the President under article 223(4) of the constitution of Republic of Uganda and his appointment was approved by the Parliament.

Under the constitution, the IGG and the two deputies, are appointed by the President and approved by Parliament. They can only serve for two terms with each term having four years.

The President called on all the relevant organs to do their part in the fight against corruption, adding that the current government has fought so many battles which were even harder compared to corruption such as extra judicial killings and other criminal acts.

“The level of corruption is smaller compared to those who are killing people without the law. A war of corruption is war of paper not guns which should be stopped at the account level. I know that with hard work and honesty we can fight it. You have a big role to play,” he said.

The President said he was aware of the need to have a fully constituted IGGs office and assured the IGG and her deputy that the issue will be handled. The President also said he will soon have a meeting with parliament to discuss issues of corruption.

The ceremony was attended by the Attorney General Peter Nyombi , Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Eng. Irene Muloni, the IGG Irene Mulyagonja and other government officials.
