Gunfire in Pader as Two Inmates Attempt to Escape

Gunfire rocked Kineni Prison in Pader district on Saturday morning as two inmates attempted to escape from custody.  

The inmates are Tony Nyeko, a robbery suspect on remand and Florence Akanyo. The duo attempted to escape when they were deployed to plough the prison farm.

Anthony Opio, the Officer In charge of Kineni government Prison says  warders opened the fire when they saw the inmates attempting to flee to stop them.

The inmates were later rearrested and hand over to Pader central Police station. Opio says Nyeko was remanded for robbery and house breaking, while Akanyo was jailed for three years after she was found guilty of possessing counterfeit bank notes worth Ugx 975,000.

According to Opio, the suspects face fresh charges of attempting to escape from lawful custody.

Enyang Anterio, the Police officer in charge of Crimes Intelligence and Investigation Pader Central Police Station says they have open a case vide police file number CRB 16/06/09/2014 and CRB 17/06/09/2014. He says the inmates are expected to appear in court on Tuesday to answer charges of escaping from lawful custody.
