INNOVATIVE: Consumers Excited over Kampala Salt’s ‘Rwenzori Salt Brand’, Nile and Uzuri also in Offing

The Company’s General Manager Alfonso Camilo told Red pepper in an exclusive interview that their mother brand, Kampala Salt, will now innovatively have other provincial brands namely; Rwenzori, Nile and Uzuri to cater for all regions the country and the entire East African domain.

‘’Already the people of western Uganda have started enjoying the Rwenzori salt brand and we are determined to entirely serve  customers in all regions because it’s the reason we are in business’’, revealed Alfonso.

With their daily and monthly production capacity at 16000 tons and 192000 tons respectively, the company intends to satisfy Uganda annual total market consumption of 200,000 especially with support from government through incentives like tax holidays and import duty reduction.

Bhavesh Varsani , the company’s finance manager said presently Kampala Industries has two salt brands on market; Kampala salt and Rwenzori salt packed in 200gm,500gm,25kg and 502kg.

Uganda has been spending billions of money annually on salt importation for consumption since the quality of salt at Lake Katwe is not suitable for human consumption.

According to a report by a Norwegian firm and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Sodium Chloride (NaCl) for human consumption should be over 97% however that of Lake Katwe is only 72% which makes it unsuitable for eating.

‘’This is the reason why we are importing raw materials from India and Egypt because Kenya also has less compared to what they need for production’’, said Patel Ashokkumar, the company’s production manager.
