This year will probably pass as Songstress Juliana Kanyomozi’s best in a long time. After winning a BEFFTA award in London last month, she is set to add to that recognition after picking nomination for a kora award.

The music judge has been nominated in the category of best female artist east Africa for her song ‘I am Ugandan’ alongside Kenya’s Marya, Ethiopia’s Helen Berhe and Esther Aweke, Somalia’s Ikraan Caraale and Tanzania’s Saida Kaloli.

Other Ugandans who were nominated include talented RnB singer Aziz Azion for his hit song my oxygen, in the category of best male newcomer, Mesahc Semakula and DJ Micheal were nominated for their duet Nina Omukwano in best male gospel category.

The last Ugandan to win the prestigious award was Pastor George Okudi of the wipolo fame who won the best male artist east African as well as Best African Male Artiste in 2007 in south Africa.

Ugandans Susan Kerunen, R&B star Michael Ross, Ugandan pop trio Blu3 and urban hip-hop outfit Klear Kut have also been nominated before.

This year’s event will be held in Ivory Coast’s capital Abidjan at Palais des congrès of Hôtel Ivoire, on December 29.

In a new development the organizer Ernest Adjovi announced that American Rnb singer Chris Brown will grace the event in December as the guest artist. Big music names like Micheal Jackson and Mariam Makeb (RIP) have previously graced the awards

The Kora Awards was founded in 1994 and is comparable to the American Grammy Awards in intent. Reputed to be the most prestigious music award in sub-saharan African, the award is named after the ‘Kora,’ an important West African plucked chordophone.
