Kabwohe–Sheema – What began as a night of prayer and devotion ended in unspeakable tragedy after a speeding Toyota Fielder mowed down worshippers, leaving seven dead in a grisly dawn crash.

The fatal accident happened at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday at Rushara in Kabwohe, Sheema District, along the busy Mbarara–Bushenyi Highway—turning the usually calm stretch into a scene of horror.

Eyewitnesses say the black Toyota Fielder (registration UA 702DL), heading from Bushenyi towards Mbarara, suddenly lost control under unclear circumstances before ramming into the group of worshippers who were trekking home after overnight prayers at St. Rose Catholic Church.

The impact was devastating.

Seven people died on the spot, their bodies scattered along the roadside in a chilling aftermath that left residents in shock and disbelief. The victims are believed to be residents of Rukungu, Kabingo, Kitooha and Karushegu villages—tight-knit communities now plunged into mourning.

Two other survivors were left fighting for their lives and were rushed to ICOBI Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Police quickly sealed off the area as traffic officers launched investigations into the exact cause of the crash, with early reports pointing to possible loss of control by the driver.

The bodies of the deceased have since been taken to Kabwohe Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examinations as families begin the painful process of identifying their loved ones.

Residents who gathered at the scene described the incident as “heartbreaking,” with some questioning road safety along the highway, which has in the past been a hotspot for deadly accidents.

As investigations continue, grief hangs heavy over Kabwohe.

What should have been a peaceful walk home after prayers has instead become a nightmare that seven families will never wake up from.

More details are expected…
