KAMPALA – The death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has left a deep void, with MTN Uganda Board Chairman Charles Mbire paying an emotional tribute to the fallen monarch and pledging Shs100 million towards his burial arrangements.
Mbire on Thursday visited the late King’s residence in Buziga, Kampala, where he joined the royal family and the people of Tooro in mourning the passing of the young monarch.
Speaking on behalf of the MTN Uganda Board, management and staff, Mbire described King Oyo’s death as a major loss not only to the Kingdom of Tooro but to the entire country.
“On behalf of the MTN Uganda Board, management and staff, I extend our deepest condolences to the royal family, the people of Tooro and all Ugandans. King Oyo diligently carried the hopes of his people, and his passing is a great loss to the nation,” Mbire said.
In a gesture of solidarity with the Kingdom, MTN Uganda announced a Shs100 million contribution through the National Organising Committee to support preparations for the late King’s interment.
The contribution comes as Tooro prepares to bid farewell to its king, with thousands of mourners expected to gather to pay their final respects.
Beyond the mourning period, MTN Uganda said it will continue walking with the Obukama of Tooro and supporting programmes that were close to King Oyo’s heart.
The telecommunications giant has for years partnered with Tooro Kingdom on initiatives covering youth empowerment, sports, health, education and community development.
The partnership, according to MTN Uganda, reflects its commitment to working with cultural institutions to promote inclusion, nurture talent and drive development in communities.
Mbire pledged that the company would maintain the partnership with the Obukama of Tooro, ensuring that initiatives championed by the late King continue to receive support.
King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne as a child and grew into one of Uganda’s most recognisable cultural leaders, carrying the hopes and aspirations of his kingdom throughout his reign.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Tooro and beyond, with leaders, institutions and ordinary Ugandans paying tribute to a monarch whose reign spanned decades.
