KISORO: Machete-wielding man shot, killed by police officer

A 35 year old man was shot dead by a police officer in Kisoro District after he reportedly attempted to harm the officer with a panga and attempted to evade arrest.

Elly Maate, the  Kigezi Regional  Police Spokesman  identified the deceased as  Uwimana Rashid Baker, also known as Byirimana, a  resident of Rugyendabare village, Rutaka parish in Nyundo sub-county.

He was allegedly shot and killed by PC Wilson Bazimaziki, a security guard at Chameleon Hotel, after he reportedly attempted to harm the officer with a panga while trying to evade arrest.

Maate says that the fatal shooting occurred when Baker, armed with a panga, allegedly attacked Komuhangi Stephen, squeezing his neck and demanding money forcefully in his shop.

Residents intervened, rescuing Stephen on the night of December 1st , 2023.

That is when the cop intervened and shot Baker in the leg (tibia).

His killer weapon, a panga, was recovered from him. Despite being rushed to Kisoro Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on the way. The police statement describes the deceased as a security threat due to his attempt on Komuhangi Stephen’s life.

A General Enquiry File (GEF) has been opened and a team of officers was dispatched to the crime scene and statements taken.
