Legislators pins government on Exporting Ugandans as maids

Members of Parliament yesterday blamed government on export of Ugandans to Saudi Arabia to work as house maids.
In a plenary session chaired by Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, legislators demanded government to explain to the country the details of the Memorandum of Understanding on exporting Ugandans to work as domestic workers in Saudi Arabia.
“Tomorrow we expect a statement from government explaining to the country the details of the Memorandum of Understanding on exporting domestic workers,” she said.
Kadaga said that Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Gender was recently in the press, happy about the Memorandum of Understanding that would export domestic workers.
Ayivu county MP Atiku Benard said some of the girls who are exported as domestic workers in the Middle East are turned into sex slaves.
Kitgum Woman MP Beatrice Anywar said that government is ignoring companies that are exporting women as sex slaves and that those companies are owned by government officials.
Hon. Okupa Elijah called on government to immediately explain why they ignored the Parliament resolution not to export any domestic workers.
“I know some Members of Parliament who own companies that deal with the exportation of domestic workers,” Okupa said.
In July Ugandan government entered into an agreement with the Saudi Arabia government for the exportation of jobless Ugandans to work as domestic workers.
Under the agreement which takes effect in September, thousands of jobless youth are recruited as private pilots, domestic accounts staff, personal doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, secretaries, security guards, private drives and housemaids to work in Saudi Arabia.
