President Yoweri Museveni met the rebels’ delegation in Rwakitura

President Yoweri Museveni yesterday met and held discussions with the M23 delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo led by Francois Rucogoza at his country home in Rakitura, Kiruhura district.

The M23 delegation is currently involved in peace talks with the Congolese government in Kampala aimed at among other things reviewing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 23 March 2009, security issues, and social issues, political and economic as well as mechanisms for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Kampala Accord.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Defense Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the president was briefed about the progress of the ongoing peace talks.

Kiyonga is mediating the talks between the two sides.

This meeting comes amid reports that the talks have reached a deadlock over the rebels’ opposition to a plan to deploy a neutral international force in eastern Congo.

Jean Baptiste Rudaseswa, the legal adviser for the M23 delegation to the peace talks, said he sees no progress in the negotiations. He said their last meeting was on Jan. 18, and that the M23 representatives now spend more time relaxing at their hotel.

“We do not see any progress,” Rudaseswa said. “We did not come here because we were in a position of weakness…We declared a unilateral ceasefire and now what we are seeing is a standstill. We are telling the Congolese government that either you talk or you fight. You can’t do both at the same time.” Rudaseswa added.

  1. Why don’t these opportunists leave our country and go back to their largest country in Africa so that we can try to sort out our own political problems? They are behaving as if this small African country has no political problems of its own.

  2. Uganda remains a peaceful country in the great region with the largest number of refugees from all great lakes region. that why everyone is running to Uganda.
