A man in Bugomola village, Kibanda Sub County in Rakai district has hung himself after discovering he is HIV/AIDS positive.
Residents discovered Gerald Nkambwe’s (38) body hanging from a tree by a roadside this morning.
A neigbour John Mulindwa says although Nkambwe had been acting strangely for at least a week, he did not expect him to commit suicide.
Mulindwa says that Nkambwe had been ill for some time before he gathered the courage to go for an HIV/AIDS test about a week ago. He tested positive and fell into a depression. Nkambwe was unmarried.
The Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Noah Sserunjoji has confirmed the incident. Nkambwe’s body has already been retrieved for post mortem.
Last year a house wife in Kabulasoke sub county Gomba district set herself on fire and died after testing positive for HIV/AIDS.
A Survey recently conducted in over 14 districts including Rakai entitled the “Uganda Aids Accountability Scored Card” put the country prevalence rate at 7.3 %up from 6.4 % .
