Mulago Paramedic Students Sent Home Over Strike
Students of the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management were on Tuesday sent home over a strike.
The students were protesting over congestion in their hostels, poor meals and constant power blackouts they say have made then fail to read. They also add that a room which is supposed to accommodate 2 people, houses 8.
They also accuse the management of charging them sh90, 000 library fees yet there are no books in the library.
When the strike begun On Monday, Police deployed heavily at the Institute at the main referral Hospital Mulago in the capital Kampala to calm the situation but in vain.
“Your actions are contrary to your presence in this institute. For safety of government property, the Hospital and management, the governing council of this institute has directed that you go home with immediate effect” read part of the notice ordering the closure.
Earlier, there seemed to be a possibility of bringing the strike to an end after the administration had promised to address the students’ grievances.
Alfred Otim, the deputy principal of the institute promised to solve the students’ grievances saying their issues cannot be solved overnight.
“There are steps to follow and other partners involved in resolving their problems but I promise that this will be resolved. I urge them to be patient and just give us some time as we find ways of resolving this together with our partners,” he added.
However, the management failed to solve the power blackouts’ problem saying power supplier Umeme was wrongfully demanding a whopping Shs 915 million from them forcing the institute to close.
