Mumbere To Blame For Kasese Massacre — Police

Police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi has accused the Rwenzururu King, Charles Wesley Mumbere for causing massacre in Rwenzori region.

While appearing on NBS TV this morning, Kaweesi said, the situation in Kasese wouldn’t be the way it is since Mumbere and his royal guards heed to the police directive of surrendering deadly weapons.

“Charles Mumbere is solely to be blamed for what happened in Kasese because of his method of approach. We had negotiations with him for almost a whole day but he failed to comply,” Kaweesi said.

“Mumbere built this militia, all other cultural leaders are guarded by the state and they have no problem,” he added.

Kaweesi refuted claims that it was security operatives who attacked the kingdom saying that it’s the guards who first attacked a UPDF senior officer with an improvised explosive, thus prompting the police to retaliate.

Since Saturday, over 60 people are reportedly dead and many others injured.

As police is chasing and arresting the royal guards that were involved in the clash, it is reported that many of them are fleeing the country through Democratic Republic of Congo. Their commander, Kalungi Nasser, tops the list of guards mostly wanted by police. His whereabouts are not yet clear but it is believed that he is among those who fled the country.

Meanwhile, Mumbere is under arrest after police suspected him to be the commander behind royal guards and Kaweesi declined to mention where he is currently detained.

However, Kaweesi said the situation in Kasese is very calm, life is normal and people are back to their businesses
