Museveni Warns Machar On Unrealistic Demands

President Museveni has counselled the consultative meeting that is sitting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia over the civil war in South Sudan against conceding to what he describes as ‘unrealistic demands’ from renegade Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar.
The President’s message was carried by regional affairs minister Asuman Kiyingi who is holding different meetings with key stakeholders.
By the time of filing this report, Kiyingi had met with the South Sudan President Silva Kiir, a representative of Machar and also the IGAD officials overseeing the talks.
We have learnt that the president is concerned by Machar’s demands which include being made the executive prime minister.
The SPLA rebel leader has also demanded that his commander be installed as the overall commander of the SPLA force.
Multiple sources say Museveni is opposed to Machar’s demand that his rebel led faction get major posts in the cabinet of Transitional Government of National Unity (TGONU).
Kiyingi confirmed being in Addis Ababa but was uncomfortable delving into the details of the Museveni’s message to the stakeholders.
The minister told us the he was tasked by the president to study the process and advise accordingly.
“I am here to see how we can help our brothers of South Sudan to attain peace, which has caused problems for our region,” Kiyingi told us via phone from Ethiopia.
The civil war in newly independent South Sudan has been raging for one year this December. The conflict is reported to have claimed thousands of lives and both warring sides have been accused of perpetuating ethnic cleansing.
