NemoStars Remind KAVC Who is Top Dog

After leading KAVC by a set, and were ahead by one point (11-10) in the second of the washed out earlier final on September 8, Nemostars lights up the Uganda volleyball scene winning the National Club Championship on Wednesday night.

With the coveted championship in hand, Anthony Ndawula’s side showed record winners Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) who is the boss on the court outwitting them 3-2 in a jaw-dripping final at MTN Lugogo Arena , KAVC were chasing a record 13th title, while for Nemostars representing Uganda again at the Africa Club Championship was all that mattered.
KAVC took the first set 25-21, but Nemostars led by skipper, George Aporu fought back to win the second and third 25-22 and 25-18 respectively.
KAVC who last clinched the trophy in 2004, did not want to go down without a fight pulled back one set with a 25-14 score line to force a decisive but Nemo could not let their golden chance pass with a 15-11 win to rewrite history.
“We had to prove to our critics that the Tripoli (African Championship) experience was not a fluke,” Nemo captain, Aporu told Red Pepper after the game. “That’s why we fought like our lives depend on this one match,” Aporu who made the winning match point added.
About KAVC’s pedigree, coach Ndawula said; “They might be record holders but we showed them that character and preparation are a good combination. We were prepared for the challenge and it was important to be able to show what we can do.”
It was the third time both teams are meeting in finals of Uganda Volleyball Federation-sanctioned tournaments this year. Nemostars won the Makerere Open 2-1 in February whereas KAVC picked up the Nkumba event by a similar score line in July.
