KAMPALA – Uganda-based integrated textile manufacturer Fine Spinners Limited is investing an additional US$5 Million (about Shs19.7 billion) in state-of-the-art machinery as it moves to expand production, strengthen local value addition and penetrate new African markets.

The fresh investment brings the company’s total investment in its textile mill since incorporation to US$5 Million (about Shs137.6 billion), according to the company.

Fine Spinners said the new machinery will significantly boost its production capacity and give the company greater flexibility to manufacture a wider range of textile products for the Ugandan and African markets, as well as meet the requirements of export customers.

The investment comes as Africa’s textile and apparel industry experiences growing demand for locally manufactured products, driven by an expanding consumer market, urbanisation and efforts by governments and businesses to deepen local and regional manufacturing.

Fine Spinners Chairman Jaswinder Bedi said the investment reflects the company’s confidence in the future of textile manufacturing on the continent.

“This investment demonstrates our confidence in the future of textile manufacturing in Africa and our commitment to building a world-class manufacturing operation,” Bedi said.

He said the additional machinery would enable Fine Spinners to serve more customers across Africa while increasing the value generated through local manufacturing.

SHS118BN ALREADY INVESTED

Fine Spinners said it has already invested about Shs118 billion in its mill since incorporation, with the latest Shs19.7 billion injection taking the total investment to approximately Shs137.6 billion.

The company said the latest investment is part of its broader ambition to build a stronger Pan-African manufacturing presence, using Uganda as a strategic base to access new markets.

Bedi said Fine Spinners was not simply seeking to increase production volumes but to strengthen the entire textile value chain.

“Our focus is not simply on increasing production, but on strengthening the entire value chain; from cotton and yarn to fabric and finished garments, and creating products that can compete effectively in African and international markets,” he said.

COTTON-TO-GARMENT PUSH

A key component of Fine Spinners’ business model is local value addition, including the use of locally grown cotton.

The company processes raw agricultural products into yarn, fabric and finished garments, creating an integrated production chain that links farmers to manufacturing and finished products.

Fine Spinners said the model contributes to the development of a more integrated regional textile value chain while reducing reliance on imported finished textile products.

The company is also exploring opportunities to strengthen partnerships with customers, suppliers and other industry stakeholders as it expands its market reach.

TARGETING NEW AFRICAN MARKETS

The additional investment is expected to support Fine Spinners’ expansion into new African markets, leveraging Uganda’s strategic location and the company’s existing manufacturing capabilities.

Bedi said the company’s ambition is to establish a manufacturing platform rooted in Africa but capable of competing globally.

“Our ambition is to build a manufacturing platform that is firmly rooted in Africa but capable of competing globally,” he said.

The company said the investment will also have a wider economic impact through employment creation, technical skills development and strengthening of the textile value chain.

The investment comes as African governments and businesses increasingly seek to expand local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported products, creating opportunities for textile producers with the capacity to serve regional markets.
