KAMPALA – Government has called for increased investment and innovative financing mechanisms to unlock more capital for Uganda’s housing and construction sector as rapid urbanisation and population growth continue to increase demand for homes and infrastructure.
State Minister for Housing, Princess Persis Namuganza, said the sector needs long-term and patient capital to support sustainable housing development, infrastructure expansion and urban growth.
Namuganza made the call in a speech delivered on her behalf by Dave Khayangayanga, Director at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, during the opening of the second edition of the Uganda Real Estate and Housing Expo at Kingdom Kampala Gardens on Friday.
The two-day expo is running under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Housing”, bringing together players from the real estate, housing, construction and related sectors.
Namuganza said the combination of rapid urbanisation, population growth, climate change and limited public resources requires Uganda and other African countries to rethink how housing and urban development are financed.
She pointed to public-private partnerships, development finance, green bonds, impact investing, infrastructure investment trusts and municipal bonds as some of the financing mechanisms that could help mobilise the huge capital required to develop the sector.
“As our cities expand across Africa, they require massive investments in infrastructure, housing, and essential services that will not only support urban growth but also drive long-term development,” she said.
The Minister urged participants at the expo to use the platform to explore emerging technologies, build partnerships and identify practical solutions capable of delivering affordable, sustainable and climate-resilient housing.
She said government remains committed to supporting the growth of the real estate and housing industry, which she described as an important contributor to economic development, employment creation and improved livelihoods.
Namuganza also commended the organisers, particularly Douglas Events Ltd and officials from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, for expanding the expo platform since its inaugural edition.
She encouraged members of the public to visit the expo at Kingdom Kampala Gardens to explore new construction technologies, building materials, equipment and services being showcased by exhibitors.
The Minister said the participation of manufacturers, contractors and other professionals was a sign of the growing importance of real estate and construction as an investment and economic growth sector.
The expo provides a platform for stakeholders to showcase innovations, forge partnerships and discuss the financing, technology and policy challenges facing Uganda’s housing and construction industry.
