Kampala – Fresh cracks have reportedly burst wide open inside the Patriotic League of Uganda, after two of its top guns gave a high-profile birthday bash for Muhoozi Kainerugaba a dramatic cold shoulder.

Secretary General Daud Kabanda and Chief Mobiliser Michael Mawanda were nowhere to be seen as the Thursday night dinner—held in honour of the General’s 52nd birthday—rolled out the red carpet for loyalists and power brokers in the capital.

And their absence? It didn’t just whisper trouble—it screamed it.

Insiders now say the no-show was no accident, but the latest sign that bitter infighting inside PLU is far from buried. While the event pulled in a string of newly elected MPs and heavy hitters, the Karamoja bloc was reportedly tied up in presidential engagements. But Kabanda and Mawanda’s absence hit differently—harder, louder, and far more political.

Adding intrigue to the night was the presence of Parliament Speaker Anita Annet Among, who graced the dinner as guest of honour. Her known closeness to Kabanda only deepened the mystery, with insiders wondering why a man seen warmly receiving her just days earlier suddenly vanished from such a crucial gathering.

Kabanda had recently been spotted front and centre during the rollout of MK birthday marathon kits, even personally welcoming the Speaker. Yet when it mattered most—he was missing in action.

Political watchers are now connecting the dots, pointing to a growing rift between Kabanda and PLU Vice Chairperson Michael Nuwagira, alias “Toyota.” The Secretary General has reportedly skipped several of Nuwagira’s recent mobilization events, raising serious questions about who is really steering the PLU ship—and whether it’s heading for stormy waters.

This is not the first time the outfit has flirted with chaos. In the immediate aftermath of the January elections, PLU foot soldiers turned on each other in ugly internal clashes that forced “Toyota” to step in and declare a public ceasefire. Even then, Kabanda and Mawanda kept their distance, dodging the spotlight at a moment meant to signal unity.

For a while, tensions seemed to cool—especially after Gen. Muhoozi took to X (formerly Twitter) to publicly defend Kabanda following attacks from Frank Gashumba. But behind the scenes, the cracks appear to have only widened.

Now, with the MK birthday marathon looming this Sunday, the pressure is on. Will the missing duo resurface and present a united front—or will their continued absence confirm what many already fear: that PLU is a house divided?

This political drama is far from over!
