Police Harvests 136 Drivers In Crackdown On Masaka-Kampala Road
The Uganda Police Force on Monday arrested over 136 drivers in an operation along the now deadly Masaka-Kampala highway.
According to the force, 65 drivers have already been arraigned before the courts of law following their arrest in an operation dubbed, “Fika Salama.”
“72 drivers are expected to appear in court today and tomorrow,” the police said in a tweet on Monday afternoon.
The Kampala – Masaka highway has in the recent past made headlines over the increased number of accidents along the same road that have claimed more than 30 lives in the past two months. According to statistics gathered by the Police, at least 200 people have been killed and nearly double that number has been injured in road accidents on Kampala-Masaka highway in the last six months.
Most accidents happened at a section between Nsangi in Wakiso District and Lwera in Kalungu District, where 96 people lost their lives in motor accidents. The section between Lwera and Masaka Town came second with 79 deaths. The section between Nsangi and Kampala city recorded the rest of the deaths.
The force is now planning to extend the operation to other highways with dangerous spots.
