The Uganda police have issued a fresh terror alert warning that terrorists are planning an attack against Education Institutions in the country especially Universities in the capital Kampala.

This warning was issued on Thursday in a press statement signed by the spokesperson of the force, Judith Nabakooba.

Members of the public have been advised to “exercise vigilance” and “work with Police to ensure total security at such educational institutions and other public places during this season.”

This warning comes days after police recalled all its officers who were on leave and issued a red alert after the American embassy in Uganda sent a notice to its citizens, warning of a possible Westgate-style attack in Kampala.

The last time the police issued a red alert was in July 2010.

Uganda has never been the same since twin explosions targeting football fans at a restaurant and rugby club in Kampala, Uganda, on 11 July killed 76 people and seriously injured dozens more. The Somali Islamist group al-Shabab, which has links to AL Qaeda, claimed responsibility.

It is the same group that claimed the recent September 21 attack on Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, where armed militants stormed the facility, shooting to death more than 60 people and injuring hundreds others.

Below is the full police statement;

We have received information of a roaming planned terror attack on Educational institutions with a focus on universities in Kampala and across the country this week.

As Police, we request proprietors of education institutions to give support to our personnel who are going to be deployed in the respective places.

Members of the public are called upon to exercise vigilance, work with Police to ensure total security at such educational institutions and other public places during this season.

However, there should be no panic or fear.

Thank you.
