Rebel MPs’ Verdict Date Set

The Constitutional Court will this Friday (February 21) pass its much awaited judgment on the fate of four expelled NRM rebel MPs in Parliament.
The four include Kampala central MP Muhammad Nsereko, Ndorwa East MP Wilfred Niwagaba Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo and BuyagaWest MP Barnabas Tinkasimire ().
The court had initially set October 15, 2013 to deliver the judgment but the day fell on a public holiday and since then no substantive date was set to deliver the judgment.
The extended wait had kept the public in suspense with Kanyeihamba and Co. advocates, the law firm representing the MPs writing several letters to the head of the court demanding that the judgment be delivered.
Last year, the Constitutional Court ordered the Speaker of Parliament to temporarily block the four MPs from accessing Parliament until the final verdict is delivered but the Supreme Court reversed the same decision and the MPs have been conducting Parliament business.
This case arose last year when the NRM party and two of its supporters, including Lt. Saleh Kamba (Kibuku MP) petitioned the Constitutional Court challenging the Speaker’s decision to keep the MPs in the House despite having been expelled from the party.
The Speaker held that the MPs’ expulsion from their party cannot lead to being thrown out of Parliament.
