Rugunda Warns Against Politicizing Operation Wealth Creation

Premier Ruhakana Rugunda

Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has urged Ugandans to desist from politicizing the newly introduced Operation wealth creation, a program started by President Yoweri Museveni to boost agricultural production in the country and ensure producers earn household incomes.
The operation, coordinated by Uganda Peoples Defence Forces empowers the army to run activities previously under the National Agricultural Advisory Services. The army was deployed after an experiment with UPDF officers in former freedom struggle zones that discovered the soldiers performed better in distributing planting and breeding materials for much less money.
The move however was met with resistance and criticism across the country by people claiming that the use of military coordinators is an unwarranted ploy by the ruling party -National Resistance Movement- to militarize the agricultural sector.
Rugunda described the statements as unfortunate and implored all local government leaders to support and embrace the project which he says is primarily aimed at enhance household incomes. He made the remarks while addressing Kabale district leaders at Rukiiko hall last evening.
Lieutenant Colonel Ismail Masudi, the commander of Operation wealth creation in Kigezi region also dismisses information that all activities previously under the National Agricultural Advisory Services-NAADS were scrapped before UPDF officers took over the program.
He however explains that UPDF soldiers are just reinforcing what is already in place by sourcing for the right inputs in addition to ensuring that correct procedures which have often been left aside are adhered to.
Kabale District chairperson Patrick Besigye Keihwa says that district leadership has already embarked on a deliberate move to sensitize the public and assure them that the wealth creation operation is meant for them so that they do not just feel pushed aside by the presence of the Military.
