Savio Kabugo in CHAN fitness race

Africa Nations Championships qualifier

Uganda v Tanzania

Charges: Sh10,000 (Open) 25,000 (Pavilion)

Uganda Cranes defender Savio Kabugo is in fitness race to make Saturday’s 2014 CHAN home qualifier against Tanzania.

The SC Victoria University centre back sustained his injury in training two days after Milutin Sredejovic had brought his victorious Cranes side back to Kampala.

Uganda team physician Doctor Ronald Kasolo said Savio will undergo a late fitness test on Wednesday to determine whether the star would be fit to play.

“Savio who sustained an ankle injury has been assessed today (Tuesday) her in Kampala but will be again checked tomorrow in the afternoon to ascertain whether he is fit to make the trip or not,” Dr Kasolo said.

“We suspected he had a blood-clot or probably a damaged ligament but the first tests were all negative,” he added

“He is doing light training and so far we are being cautious with him.”

“I expect him to recover,” Micho optimistically told RED on Tuesday but one would notice a worried coach though he argued Kiira Young defender Richard Kasagga  and Savio’s club-mate Dennis Guma who played in midfield during the first leg were very good replacements in the centre.

FUFA Super league winner Fahad Kawooya would also ably cover up for the 18-year-old defender.

AWOL Etoile Du Sahel (Tunisian) Uganda striker Emma Okwi also joined the team in training today.

Uganda is on the brink of qualifying for a second consecutive CHAN final tournament.

The tournament will be held in South Africa early next year. This will be the third edition of the competition.

The Cranes will after this weekend’s fixture shift their focus to the 2014 World Cup game against Senegal in Morocco.
