Women activists in Arua are demanding for thorough investigations into the death of Molly Obema, a teacher at Ociba Islamic primary school.

Obema died at Arua hospital on Monday last week due to excessive bleeding, 30 minutes after delivering a healthy baby girl. It is alleged that Obema, who was admitted at Arua Hospital on Thursday delivered normally on Monday. However, on realizing that the baby was weak, the medics on duty decided to take her to the theater and put heron oxygen.

They allegedly left two nurses whose names have not yet been established in care of Obema in the maternity ward. But on returning, the medics found Obema had bled for more than 30 minutes. Obema later succumbed to excessive blooding.

Paul Ambia, the senior anesthetist, who was duty on Monday told mourners on Wednesday that Obema died due to excessive bleeding despite the fact that they tried to save her life through blood transfusion.  He explained that the unfortunate event happened after the nurses because the nurses failed to detect and arrest the situation in time.

Yuma Manesi, who spoke on behalf of Obema’s family, thanked the medical workers for saving the life of the baby but said they regret the death of her mother. As a result, women activists in Arua led by Christine Bako, the District woman MP have called for thorough investigations into the death of Obema. Bako says the medical workers would have kept checking on Obema when the baby was in theater if they were serious.

Obema, who is survived by three children was married to Dudu Obema, the Dadamu Gobolola Internal security officer. Dudu Obema says that he will follows up the matter once it is established that his wife died as a result of negligence on the part of the medical workers.

In 1999 and 2010 two women died at Arua referral hospital after undergoing C-section as a result excessive bleeding. It later emerged that their wounds were not stitched well after they were operated.
