Sserunkuma’s Gor Mahia Lifts DSTV Super Cup
2012 FKF Cup winners Gor Mahia are the 2013 DSTV Super Cup after beating ten-man Tusker FC 5-4 on post-match penalties in the Kenya Premier League 2013 season curtain raiser at Nyayo stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game ended in a barren draw after 90 minutes and thus had to be decided on penalties which Gor edged.
Tusker had to complete the game with a man less after goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch was sent off in the third-minute, after he handled the ball outside the box, while trying to counter a Paul Kiongera attack.
Coach Robert Matano was left with no option but to substitute Ismail Dunga with Keeper George Opiyo. With a little bit of more restructuring, Tusker maintained a resilience that saw them hold Gor to the half-time break.
After recess, both sides created good scoring opportunities but no goals to show thanks to poor finishing, resilient defending and good goal keeping.
The match went into the round of penalties, which ended with both teams tied 3-3, after the first five spot kicks as both sides missed twice forcing the game to be decided on sudden death penalties.
Donald Mosoti and Solomon Nasio netted their attempts, while Ugandan Martin Kiiza sent the second Tusker shot into Mapunda’s hands, to hand Gor the title.
Of the five Ugandans who were involved in the shootout, only two scored while the rest missed theirs.
The triumph was sweet revenge for K’Ogalo who lost the 2012 curtain raiser 4-1 on penalties against the Brewers.
