Think out the Box—Varsity students Told

The United Nations Associations of Uganda (UNAU) secretary general, Richard Tinkasimire has challenged University students to always think outside the box by coming up with new ideas and innovations rather than confining their brains only to what professors teach them.

He said, young people across the country should endeavour to develop their leadership as well negotiation and diplomacy skills into practice, and get into innovative thinking.

“No country can do without the youth in society. You are the source of innovative ideas,” Tinkasimire said while encouraging the students to think outside the box.

Tinkasimire made the remarks last week while addressing Students from various universities in Uganda who had converged at Cavendish University to discuss the new United Nations’ Sustainable Development goals and suggest resolutions that will contribute to the UN actions in the coming years.

Last month, the United National General Assembly chaired by President Museveni passed the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The 2030 Agenda is a shared responsibility and a universal road map for development with an emphasis on equality.

He said Governments alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of realizing the 2030 goals hence efforts are needed, across sectors and stakeholders.

“The conference gives students a chance to present their ideas on global issues of human rights issues, economic, social development, environmental,” said Morris Otieno, United Nations Associations patron for Cavendish University during the opening of the event.

The SDG’s 2015-2030 is focused on ending poverty and hunger, achieving food security through sustainable agriculture, inclusive and equitable education, gender equality, ensuring access to affordable and reliable sanitation for all.

The participants recognized terrorism threat, environmental concerns prompted by increased activity in the mining, oil and gas exploration and planned commercial as some of the East Africa’s   emerging issues that may threaten the realization of the SDG 2015-2030.

The model UN General Assembly conference in Uganda that started on Thursday last week saw participating students acting as heads of states or ambassadors from various UN member states.

The Uganda model UN Council is held annually.
