Three Health Workers Arrested Over Absenteeism

Police in Kabale district is holding three health workers for allegedly abandoning their duty stations and causing financial loss to the government.

The three are said to have abandoned their stations to pursue further studies without formal leave. Police says the act tantamount to abuse of office.

Those arrested are Godfrey Bambabwire (30) a nursing officer attached to Bufundi health center III and  Margret Nema (25)  an enrolled nurse at Ikumba health center III. The two are said to have disappeared from their respective workplaces in September 2013.

The third victim is Darius Orikiriza (28) an enrolled nurse at Nyakashebeya health center II who was initially attached to Rugarama private hospital in Kabale town before being recruited by Kabale district local government in March 2013. He continuously drew salaries from the two places during the period.

The three health workers are being held at Kabale police station.

Kabale district health officer Dr. Patrick Tusiime said that the health workers in the district are continually absconding from duty an act he says will not be tolerated.

Tusiime adds that more health workers are being investigated for similar cases.
