Uganda’s National soccer team, the Uganda Cranes on Saturday night proved they are the undisputed soccer kings of the East African region after they brushed aside Kenya Harambee stars 2 – 1 in the 2012 CECAFA Tusker Cup final to win a record 13th title at Namboole stadium in Kampala.

The champions successfully defended the trophy on home soil after beating a resilient Kenyan side.

It is Coach Bobby Williamson’s third CECAFA trophy ever since he was appointed Uganda Cranes coach.

Kenya’s Anthony Modo Kimono deflected a Robert Sentongo shot into his own net to give the Cranes the lead in the 27th minute.

Uganda’s goal keeper Hamza Muwonge who has been a spectator throughout the tournament was kept busy on the night as the Harambee stars tried in vain to penetrate the cranes’ backline.

Encouraged by the large number of fans who turned up to witness the national side win its 13th trophy, the Cranes put up a spirited fight to deny the Kenyans any chance of scoring.

However, the determined fighting spirit of the Kenyans paid off in the 86th minute when Edwin Lavasta scored for the stars, something that got many fans worried of a possible heartbreak.

It was the first goal the cranes had conceded in the whole tournament showing just how the champions have been disciplined defensively.

In the 89th minute, Baba Kizito set Namboole stadium alight with jubilation when scored the winner from a brilliant free kick to restore the champions’ lead and put the game beyond doubt.

To show, the night belonged to the champions, Uganda’s goal keeper Hamza Muwonge was recognized for keeping a clean sheet throughout the tournament until final by winning the goal keeper of the tournament, Brian Umony took home the player of the tournament award while Robert Sentongo walked away with the golden boot.

The Uganda Cranes Initiative campaign launched to garner support for the national side ahead of this tournament has certainly paid off.

Zanzibar claimed third place after defeating Tanzania 6 – 5 on penalties. The game had ended in a 0ne all draw after 90 minutes.

  1. Good 2 win it but wen will our country quolify 4 AFRICON? Nooo!! A special coach in the next compaign ok?

  2. The Red Pepper, many thanks for your news story about Uganda Cranes triumph. However, I would urge you not to distort records/history; this isn’t Coach Bobby Williamson’s third CECAFA title; it is the fourth. Do you or don’t you agree?

    After being appointed in August 2008, we played that year’s CECAFA Championship (hosted by Uganda, January 2009) which we won; Uganda 1-0 Kenya. 1st Title;

    Then, in December 2009, we played the finals again; Uganda 2-0 Rwanda. This meant we played two finals in the same year (due to delayed CECAFA the previous year). 2nd Title;

    In December 2011, we played yet another CECAFA final (hosted by Tanzania); we met Rwanda on the finals. The match ended 2-2. We won the penalties 3-2. 3rd Title;

    And finally, yesterday, (08th Dec, 2012), we played Kenya on the finals. You know what transpired. 2-1, Uganda prevailed. 4th Title.

    I therenceforth ask that you don’t distort Bobby Williamson’s record as Ugandan Coach. He has FOUR TITLES to his name/CV since appointment in August 2008.

  3. Good making the country proud.

    Its time now that structures are put in place to build on this success so that we can have our national team reach heights with strategies.

    Bobby, the lads, supporters and sponsors all well done.

  4. Has it not been due to Bobby william’s nice selection, Uganda would be heading no where, Traibalism, Dullism and big greedism was eating the entire cranes future
    Thanks Muzungu long live Bobby

  5. Trust me come AFRICON…Uganda cranes will forever disappoint. these games don’t have that much preasure like AFRICON qualifiers games..passing the tests and failing the final exams counts for nothing..so Cranes u know what u gotta do..

  6. it sounds nice and pleasant but we want some thing new we are fed up of those old success stories, what has the management done to ensure that such achievement is realised in other continental competitions?
