Uganda police have dissociated themselves from “Kifesi like thugs” who whipped Dr. Kizza Besigye supporters on Tuesday.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Abbas Byakagaba while addressing a press conference yesterday said police doesn’t know the group of masked men who beat up people and boda-boda cyclists believed to be supporters of the former presidential candidate.

This disavowal comes after the Uganda Police Force finds itself on the spot over claims that it works with illegal groups to crack the whip on opposition supporters.

“I would like to disassociate the police from the actions of those individuals,” he said.

Byakagaba said he has directed the Kampala Metropolitan CID officer to start investigations into the matter.

However, police will have to do a lot more of explaination since the men beat up people as their officers looked on or even appeared to command them.

The opposition politicians believe that the masked men were in touch with the Uganda police.

Kizza Besigye yesterday wondered why Uganda police should behave like the infamous kifesi thugs.

“It’s now official and clear. The Uganda police is now the ‘Kifesi’ police,” Besigye said.
