Former Ugandan President Field Marshal Idi Amin Dada was not a beneficiary of the 50th Uganda Independence Medal posthumously awarded to ex-Presidents including current President Yoweri Museveni.

The medals were awarded yesterday as the ruling National Resistance Movement celebrated 27 years in power at a function held at Nyakasanga Grounds in Kasese District, western Uganda.

According to General Elly Tumwine, chairperson of the National Awards and Medals Committee, Idi Amin missed out on the accolade because it was awarded to people who served honourably yet Amin left a bad legacy behind.

Idi Amin Dada was the third President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He ascended into power after overthrowing Milton Obote in a military coup as the former attended the Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting in Singapore.

Amin was overthrown in 1979 before fleeing to exile in a Saudi Arabia where he passed away in 10 years ago at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Ex-Presidents awarded the medal are Sir Edward Mutesa, Obote, Yusuf Lule, Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa and Gen. Tito Okello.

Idi Amin’s exclusion from the medals’ list has drawn mixed reactions from Ugandans with those in favour saying he should have been awarded one because he had Uganda at Heart.

  1. Even Museveni will miss in kiiza Besigye’s list of medals beneficiaries because of corruption ridden uganda, its just a matter of time.

  2. Medals are worldly pleasures, and all men have sinned before God.You could pray to God to judge Amin’s soul mercifully other than condeming his act while he was here on earth.

  3. Its equally barbaric to condemn the dead Bwana Tumwine! We have seen former presidents dying and people jubilate to the extent of getting dogs to inherit them! medals are totally nothing! If Amin left a bad legacy, how about you the long serving bush war selfish corrupt thieves who have grabbed people’s land, misused state funds, live in luxury at the expense of the poor tax payers. You will mostly be remembered for your wrongs than good deeds. People will dance, drink, eat as Israelis from slavery.

  4. Amin played a very big role for every Ugandan by expelling the Asians.
If he had not, only 2% of Ugandans would own land in Uganda. Those
Asians were buying land a developing it rapidly. Take a look at towns
like old kampala, Jinja, Masaka,Mbale, Mityana, Kamuli, Kabale, Mbarara,
Fort portal etc. This is enough to prove that if Amin had not expelled
them, Ugandans would be very very far in deep villages that even do not
exist. Therefore, Amin is the best even though is not given a medal. We
are living in our own built houses in Ntinda, Kiwatule, Najeera,Muyenga,
Kasangati Naguru, Mbuya and so on.

  5. We love you Field Marshal Iddi Amin Dada, VCO, MC, Conqueror of the British empire. Not getting an NRM medal doesn’t mean anything. You served your country to the best of your ability. You liberated your country economically. You constructed key national infrastructure like, Serena Conference center, the new Entebbe Airport, bought for your country the majority of Uganda’s foreign office headquarter include those in New york and London. Your government was never corrupt. Your army was nationally well balanced. You registered Uganda in the OIC – which has been extremely beneficial to this country, through establishing IUIU, construction of Kinyara Sugar factory, 10 IDB scholarships to Uganda every year – all these things have benefited Ugandans irrespective of tribe, religion, etc. In a special way, you gave the Muslim community in Uganda, a prime piece of land at Old Kampala which is their current Head quarters – This was a land mark correction of the colonial injustice – the colonialists gave huge pieces of land to the Protestant and Catholic churches and denied a similar and justified treatment to the Muslim community. It was only your good self, in exercise of the powers of President of republic of Uganda, that this injustice was CORRECTED. Thank you Iddi Amin. You have many better medals from Ugandans across the spectrum, even as your detractors have made a lot of propaganda against you. May your soul rest in peace.

  6. Amid did a lot when he expelled Asians in economic war. These people had dominated the Uganda’s economy .”they were milking the cow which they don’t feed”. Unfortunately our president thinks that Uganda started in1986. May be he is poor at history. By the way his divisors would have been good if they were advising a parish chief but not a president.for example SSEBAGGALA a political failure. wamma fe tujja kukuwa omudaali tofaayo. rest in peace
