Why NRM Dumped 130 EALA Contenders, Maintained Incumbent Representatives
Details have emerged as to why the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party highest organ, Central Executive Committee (CEC), resolved to maintain its incumbent representatives in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) for another term.
About 129 individuals had officially applied for the party backing to represent Uganda at the EALA.
In the statement issued after a meeting chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the CEC reviewed the 130 members who had expressed interest for election for the position of the EALA and decided to maintain the status quo.
The statement was signed by the NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, detailing that the 4th Central Executive Committee of the NRM at its 10th Meeting at State House Entebbe on Friday 8th July 2022 resolved to maintain the 6 Members of EALA.
‘’ CEC therefore endorses incumbent EALA members to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus as NRM candidates for the position. They are; Mary Mugyenyi, Rose Akol, Stephen George Odongo, Denis Namara, James Kakooza, and Paul Musamali Mwasa,” reads the letter.
Todwong, claimed that 63 members voluntarily withdrew from the race and CEC recommended that the incumbent members be maintained.
“Hereby recommends that the incumbent EALA members be maintained, in recognition of their exceptional performance to continue their tenure for another term as members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA),” adds Todwong’s statement.
Several contenders have been conversing for support ahead of the electoral in the race to the 5th regional legislative Assembly headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania.
