Arsenal Suffer Another Humiliating Defeat
Hot on the heels of the humiliation against Blackburn Rovers at The Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup match against Championship side Blackburn, comes another home defeat; this time against the Bundesliga runaway leaders, Bayern Munich, in the Champions League first leg at the Emirates Stadium.
After Wengers tetchy performance at his pre-match press conference, the last thing he needed was yet another defeat at home, and yet that is what ensued. The only surprising thing was that nobody apart from Wenger was surprised. Wenger was aggressive and irrational at his press conference and suggested that the so-called experts were wrong; however, those experts all predicted that Arsenal would be outclassed, and so they were.
After a period of total domination in the first half, Bayern took the lead after the unlikely figure of Tony Kroos volleyed into the net from the edge of the penalty area after a cross was not intercepted by a number of Arsenal defenders. It was not long before they were two up. Thomas Muller, another defensive midfielder, was the quickest to react after Van Buyten headed towards the gaol only for Arsenal keeper, Szczesny, to palm it out for him to slot home.
In the second half, Arsenal at least started a bit better. However, it was another refereeing error that gifted them an undeserved goal. The ball was kicked behind the gaol and was clearly deflected by an Arsenal player, but the referee gave a corner. What on earth the official behind the goal is there for, when he was only yards away is a joke. Arsenal scored from a defensive mix up and Podolski headed home in somewhat unconvincing fashion.
It seemed that maybe Arsenal might somehow get something from the game; however, normal service was resumed when Mandzukic scored from a wonderful cross by Lahm. That was that as far as Arsenal`s Champions League effort was concerned. There is little chance that they will overturn that deficit, something that has not happened for over 40 years!
At the end Wenger disappeared down the tunnel without the courtesy of the traditional handshake at the end of the match with his counterpart, something which is sadly becoming part of Wenger`s make-up these days, a bitter and churlish man who surely is coming to the end of his days at Arsenal
