BACK TO SQUARE ONE! NRM Reopens Battle for EALA Slots

By Evans Najuna
KAMPALA –The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced a fresh race for its East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) flag bearers, cancelling the nomination process that was conducted in March this year.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters on Kyadondo Road on Monday, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi announced that all interested aspirants must submit fresh Expressions of Interest after Parliament declared two EALA seats vacant.
The vacancies arose following the departure of Hon. Denis Namara, MP for Buyaga West Constituency, Kagadi District, and Hon. James Kakooza, MP representing Older Persons for the Central Region.
Dr. Odoi clarified that although the previous nomination exercise has been nullified, aspirants who already paid the Shs2 million expression of interest fee during the March process will not be required to pay again.
He said fresh applications and updated curriculum vitae will be received at the NRM Electoral Commission offices from Monday, June 29, to Wednesday, July 1, 2026, closing at 12 noon.
To qualify, candidates must be Ugandan citizens aged 18 years and above, registered voters, members of the NRM, and possess at least an Advanced Level certificate or its equivalent. They must also not be public servants, members of the armed forces, cultural or traditional leaders, or serving members of the 12th Parliament.
According to Dr. Odoi, the names of all aspiring candidates will be forwarded to the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), which will recommend nominees to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus for election. The Electoral Commission will later announce the date for the internal vote.
Meanwhile, the NRM Electoral Commission also announced preparations for residual elections to fill vacant LC I Chairperson flag bearer positions and Village Women Council committees. Party primaries are scheduled for July 10, while endorsement of successful candidates will run from July 11 to July 14, ahead of the Electoral Commission’s nomination exercise.
Dr. Odoi also celebrated the party’s recent victories in the Kikuube District LC V Chairperson by-election and the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election, saying the NRM had successfully reclaimed the Kalangala parliamentary seat.
He thanked party supporters for what he described as their unwavering commitment to the ruling party, saying the recent electoral victories reflect the NRM’s continued strength across the country.
