SentamuThe Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in in danger of going into extinction after the next edition holding in two years’ time, following the reluctance of countries to host it.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to receive bids for the Championship beyond the next tournament in 2016 which will be hosted by Rwanda.

The small central African nation was officially handed the CAF flag as a hand-over gesture after the 2014 edition wrapped up in South Africa on Saturday.

However, Futaa.com and The Sowetan report that the continental football body is unsure about the future of the 16-team competition after television partners Sport Five raised concerns over its marketability.

The deadline for hosting bids for 2018 and 2022 was 31 December 2013 but it has since been extended after no bids were received.

CHAN is a national team tournament where only locally-based players are selected with the view of affording them international exposure.

FIFA has given the idea its backing by grading it such that the points received by teams at the tournament will count towards the world rankings.
