The wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) party affiliated Rubaga Division Mayor Mberaze Mawula Zacchy is in trouble over debts owed to city money lenders.

Information obtained by this newspaper indicates that in October 2021, Sarah Kakembo, who is also a relations manager at NCBA Bank Uganda, reportedly approached various moneylenders seeking for a loan. Sources say, the family badly wanted money. Kakembo and her husband reportedly approached Lugogo Forest mall based AHA Finance seeking a loan of Shs20 Million. “They desperately needed money and came together and promised all sorts of deals and promises and finally wrote Cheques in favour of AHA Finance worth Shs20m and were immediately given the money…,” a source intimated. Mberaze’s wife had no option other than submitting a copy of her appointment letter at NCBA Bank that was signed by her Managing Director Anthony Ndegwa and the Human Resource Manager Raymond Byaman on June 19, 2020. Whereas the money was reportedly to be repaid in a short period, up-to-date, Sarah has reportedly not kept her word.

Eventually the police were involved and a case of obtaining money by false pretense was registered at Jinja Road Police station vide CRB 184/2022. After many summons and fruitless engagements, on the 9th of April 2022, Sarah was arrested from her hideout in Mutundwe, a Kampala suburb and swiftly transferred to Jinja Road Police where she was detained.

HOW IT TURNED BAD

The management of AHA Finance took the decision to report the matter to the police after it became very difficult for them to trace Kakembo. She all of a sudden stopped picking up their phone calls. She thought she would keep playing cat and mouse games with moneylenders but her luck run out. Her hubby, Mberaze who is a Mayor and her immediate next of kin became so busy that he could not spare even a minute to discuss her wife’s predicament.

After various reminders over many months, Sarah Kakembo and Zacchy Mberaze kept dodging the calls of AHA Finance managers and even became arrogant. Kakembo would at times threaten them that they are of high profile and no one in Kampala could risk harassing them. Mberaze who is popularly known as Taata Namuli reportedly promised to give out his plot of land in Rubaga but could not give the moneylenders a chance to survey it.

In December, the moneylenders surrounded Kakembo at her place of work and to shake off an embarrassment, she wrote a commitment letter in which she clearly stated “I kindly request to allow me up to Tuesday, December 7, 2021, to be able to pay the outstanding instalment. I commit and request you to allow me at least until that day by 2:00 pm, if I fail you go ahead with the necessary procedures.”

Indeed AHA Finance became lenient for more months until they decided to teach the banker a lesson.  Sarah was not readily available for a comment. By press time she had not been released.
