Kampala – Fashion matters; to the economy, society, and top each of us personally. Faster than anything else, what we wear tells a story of who we are or who we want to be.

Fashion is a constant presence in a person’s life. It is a daily task of choosing what clothing to put on your body for the day and it is not only used to project modesty, but it is used for self-expression.

Daven Briven (real names: Daven Ariho), one of the top fashion designers in Kampala has portrayed the importance of fashion in a person’s life. And guess what?! She owns ‘DBven‘ fashion line.

Not only does Daven have a very artsy Instagram account which demonstrates her eye for style, but she has been in love with the fashion industry since she was young.

The petite Library and Information Science graduate from Makerere University caught-up with RedPepper Digital reporter, Jolly Gwari, for an interview on Friday, March 13.

Below are the excerpts from the interview.

JG: Tell us about yourself and your background

Daven: I come from a humble background, and I am the firstborn. I still have my loving parents, who inspired me to work hard as they do. My mother is a school Principal and businesswoman and Dad is a lawyer and businessman as well. I own a boutique at Equatorial mall that makes and sells luxury stylish clothing. I love swimming, shopping, and watching comedy.

JG: How can you define Fashion?

Daven: To me fashion, is a way one expresses themselves and personality through what they wear. It also encompasses all forms of self-fashioning, including street styles, as well as so-called high fashion created by designers and couturiers. Fashion also alludes to the way in which things are made; to fashion, something is to make it in a particular form.

JG: Why did you choose a fashion designing career?

Daven: I chose fashion because I love it, I mean am passionate about it, I believe it’s in my blood, I wouldn’t see myself doing something else.

RP: which things were your inspiration while creating such designs?

Daven: I was inspired by many designers like Ralph, Russo, Ramikadi, Ryan, and Walter. For example, the kind of fabric, for a particular design, then color, the colours that pop best on particular designs would catch my eyes all the time.

JG: What skills according to u are necessary for a successful fashion designer?

Daven: Neatness, any person yarning to be a successful fashion designer must be neat and this is a must, you should be artistic too, you have to be very creative since the fashion world keeps changing at a very fast pace, and most importantly your client is your Boss.

JG: How do u stay up to date regarding fashion?

Daven: I use different fashion sites on the internet, like fashion pages on Instagram, Pinterest, fashion Magazines like vogue and more others and also being creative and innovation is essential.

JG: What kind of ethics do u believe while working with fashion?

Daven: In this industry, it’s all about Patience, neatness, language fluency, communication skills, politeness, and to mind the choice of words when talking to your customer.

JG: What are the greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Daven: My greatest strength is the passion of the business I do (fashion), it carries a lot of power and keeps me going. And my weakness is that am too much of a perfectionist and it sometimes inconveniences the people I work with.

RP: Where do u see yourself in the next 10yrs?

Daven: I have a bigger dream, and am sure in the next 10 years I will have acquired it. In a few years to come, I will be having my own brand and it will be international.

JG: Being a fashion designer, what kind of clothes will u prefer during an interview?

Daven: I would prefer something casual but a little edgy like jean pants, a satin top tucked in and carry it with heels.

JG: How would u describe your personal style?

Daven: I would describe my personal style as sophisticated, edgy, cute, sometimes a little extra, but mostly simple.

JG: Are you passionate about something else apart from fashion?

Daven: Yes, besides fashion, am also ardent about real Estate. It is also a nice business that is trying to dive in.

JG: Brief about few trending things in the fashion industry?

Daven: they are so many such as one arm coats are now tending, rompers, mini dresses, spaghetti tops, Kitengi details gowns etc.

JG: Why do u think u are the best fit for this industry?

Daven: Besides being very creative in the fashion industry, I am open-minded when it comes to fashion which is the best requirement for one to build a big brand in the fashion industry. Understanding people’s different tastes and preferences and satisfying is all that I do.
