Dr Nyanzi Sent Back to Luzira

The troubled Makerere University academician, Dr Stella Nyanzi has this morning been further remanded to Luzira prison until tomorrow (Wednesday April 29) when she will appear before High Court for hearing of her bail application.

Nyanzi was today appearing before Buganda road court. Court presided over by Chief Magistrate James Ereemye has heard that while in detention at Luzira, Dr. Nyanzi has been barred from reading any other written literature apart from the Holy bible, according to her lawyer Nicholas Opio.

“My client is being subjected to discriminatory treatment to the extent that she has been restricted to have hand written notes, books and or to have a private lawyer- client discussion,” Opio said.

In reply Resident state Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya said that prison is a regulatory facility and things such as literature for inmates are censored.

Magistrate Ereemye therefore ruled that he cannot pass judgment against prison authorities who are competent enough to do their work adding that since the concern has been raised, court should now await their feedback.

Nyanzi is facing charges of computer misuse and offensive communication for allegedly posting offensive communication that demeans the president.

Prosecution states that on January 28th, 2017 while in Kampala, Dr. Nyanzi used a computer to post on her Facbook page information referring to President Museveni as a pair of buttocks which suggestion/ proposal is obscene or indecent.

Prosecution further states that Dr. Nyanzi between January and March 2017 willfully and repeatedly used electronic communication to post messages offensive in nature via Facebook, to disturb the peace of his Excellency the president of Uganda.
