East African Challenge Golf Tees Off At Entebbe
Team Uganda's Amos Kamya is a top player
The prestigious East African Golf Challenge tournament tees off today with official practice round but actions get underway tomorrow at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) course.
Uganda last hosted the regional event at the same course in 2009.
Day One has the singles round, the pairings while the interesting foursomes and four-ball better-ball match play contests are on Saturday with and the four-ball-better-ball rounds finally on Sunday.
The East African Challenge will be contested for by six countries that include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Ethiopia. Each country will be represented by nine players.
Last year Uganda dominated proceedings for three days before losing out to Kenya by half a point at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort in Naivasha.
Uganda Breweries through its luxury whisky portfolio is the main sponsor off tournament and have committed Shs200 million.
Uganda’s national team has had more than three weeks of training and go into the tournament confident that they can reclaim the crown from their biggest rivals and defending champions Kenya.
“I have been working tooth and nail aiming to make this dream of playing for the team a reality,” says Team Uganda debutante Henry Lujja.
Rwanda’s team captain Leonard Nkurunziza said his teammates are in high spirits and ready to put up a better show compared to previous editions.
“We have had good and excellent preparations. We have no complaints at all because we know very well our opponents and we are well prepared to deal with the pressure that will come along,” he added.
“We are here to put up a good show,” Burundi coach John Kisia told Xinhua in an interview.
