EASTER: Arch-Bishop Ntagali calls for Tolerance
Stanley Ntagali, the Archbishop of Uganda has decried the harsh conditions in the country. While delivering his Easter Holiday message on the eve of Good Friday, Ntagali observed that many Ugandans are anxious, tired and worried. He listed some of the causes to the harsh conditions in the country as economic pressure, rampant youth unemployment, unstable families and poverty. He said the harsh conditions have led to mistrust amongst citizens, which is bad for the country.
Speaking on the Marriage and Divorce bill 2009, Archbishop Ntagali prayed that the out comes of the bill will provide a safe environment for Ugandan men, women and especially children, in a place they call home. He said as debate continues on the marriage and divorce bill, there is need to keep a distance from vices such as gender based violence, cohabitation, infidelity and homosexuality, which destabilize the family and threaten the family institution. He called on citizens to use the Easter season to repent, saying it is the only way through which the country can be freed from the evils such as corruption, land grabbing, child sacrifice and witchcraft.
He said by christians repenting this Easter period, the country shall be brought closer to God. He said institutions such as homes and schools shall also become enjoyable and suitable to glorify God.
In a separate press statement, Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, the Bishop Namirembe dioceses said the Easter season has come at a time when the Marriage and Divorce bill is being debated, the land question is not fully settled and homosexuality has taken center stage. He said it is at such a time when the Holy Spirit is needed to guide MPs in the debates of national interest. He said the country’s Moto, which says for God and My country, should be the guiding principle in the debates.
